UK: DOCTORS CONDEMN ELDERLY HEALTHCARE
Article Abstract:
The presidents of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and of the British Geriatrics Society have condemned the government's failure to respond to a March 1999 report by the Royal Commission on Long-term Care. This stated that personal and nursing care, which is means-tested, should instead be paid for from taxation, and 'hotel' board and lodging costs paid for by individuals, or by social security. The proposal that all personal and nursing care should be free has attracted some criticism, and this may be restricted to nursing care alone, at a cost of GB[pound] 600mn rather than GB[pound] 1bn. The presidents claim that a lack of equity in care is depriving the most needy people of support from the National Health Service.

UK: ALCHEMY CUTS WAGES AT CARE HOMES
Article Abstract:
Alchemy, the venture capital company, is cutting workers' wages by nearly 50% at two south London residential homes. Nursing assistants have been given 30 days' notice that wages will be reduced from GB[pound] 10 an hour to GB[pound] 5.65 an hour. Workers at Four Seasons Healthcare have been told that holiday entitlement will be cut and work breaks granted at the company's convenience. There will be no premium rates for overtime and no London allowances. Four Seasons Healthcare, which runs 100 residential units, says it was losing money at these homes as it was paying above the market rate.

UK: ABUSE OF ELDERLY
Article Abstract:
Campaigners from the charity Action on Elderly Abuse are incensed that abuse of the elderly very rarely comes to light. Elderly patients in homes are regularly assaulted but only the worst cases actually come to light. Cases of elderly abuse such as that of the 1987 closure of the Nye Bevan Lodge in Southwark, London, and the suspension of six nurses from the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow in 1996 indicate that ill treatment of the old is widespread in NHS (National Health Service) hospitals.
