UK: EXPANSION FOR KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN
Article Abstract:
Partly as a result of the beef crisis, the US-based Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) fast-food chain has seen sales growth of 76% in the UK in the last four years, having previously suffered from stagnation. The company has also benefited from the increasing takeaway culture, and the perception that fried chicken is healthier than fried burgers. The chain plans to increase its number of outlets by 60% to over 800 in the next five years, with the number of employees rising to around 22,000 in 2005 from 12,000 at present. Much of the growth will be in areas where it is currently weak, such as Wales. The expansion could put KFC in competition with Burger King, the second-largest fast-food chain in the UK. However, burgers currently account for 50% of the fast-food market in the UK, compared to just 20% for chicken. The growth strategy is supported by new products, such as the 'Twister' chicken wrap, and new restaurant layouts with more seating, often located on out-of-town retail parks.
