UK: FEAR OVER MP3'S IMPACT ON RECORD MARKET
Article Abstract:
Sales of over 10mn hand-held MP3 players are envisaged in 2003, compared with 1999's estimated 1.3mn, but record outlets claim that UK people are not shunning CDs for the new format. It is projected that US$ 2.5bn will be devoted to downloading music via the Internet worldwide in 2003, compared with sales of US$ 500mn in 1999. There are now 65 different MP3 players available but HMV believes that its in-shop service allowing people to create their own CDs is proving successful. HMV believes that UK people are more inclined than their US counterparts to purchase CDs on impulse. However, software such as Napster which is allowing music fans to exchange MP3s via the Internet is providing competition to record stores and worrying the record industry.

UK: DEMAND FOR EU.COM DOMAIN
Article Abstract:
The newly launched eu.com suffix is already proving to be very popular, with both private and business users registering more than three new eu.coms a second. However, the eu.com name may become redundant as soon as 2001, as the European Commission is planning to introduce an 'eu' suffix directly comparable with '.com' for European countries. According to John Sewell of Phase8, an Internet registration and domain auction company, the eu.com will never be as good as '.com' due to the fact that a web browser will automatically add dot-com to a typed name.

UK: INTERNET DOMAIN REGISTRATIONS INCREASING
Article Abstract:
There are 1.3mn .co.uk Internet domain names registered with Nominet, the official British Internet registry. There are also 2,000 companies able to accept .co.uk domain name registrations on behalf of Internet users. People registering their own names, and potential business names with a view to the future or simply to auction them off have fuelled the demand for domain names. Nominet has warned would-be registrants to check for hidden charges as the cost of registration varies widely between companies.
