UK: GOVERNMENT GIVES AIRLINES SAFETY ULTIMATUM
Article Abstract:
The UK government has given British airlines an ultimatum to improve their safety and service or face new regulations. They will be asked to provide higher standards of safety and comfort. Lord Macdonald, the Transport minister, will tell carriers to pay higher compensation for poor service, shorten check-in queues and take measures to reduce air rage. The minister also wants passengers informed of the risks of dangerous blood clots from long-haul flights. The airlines believe the government is more interested in short-term populist consumer measures rather than providing increased capacity at airports. Ministers are hesitant in establishing new airports or new runways.
