UK: PAY RISE FOR HEALTH STAFF
Article Abstract:
UK government moves to revive the health service will lead to pay increases for midwives, doctors and nurses, a move regarded as crucial in hiring the staff required to reduce waiting lists over the coming five years. The National Health Service (NHS) plan includes moves to encourage employees to work in attractive areas, along with moves to reward the hardest-working staff. An additional 20,000 nurses are being taken on, along with 2,000 GPs and 7,500 consultants.

UK: GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS INTRODUCING NHS TAX
Article Abstract:
Proposals currently being considered by the UK Government could lead to the introduction of a special "NHS tax", which would channel funds directly into health care. It is estimated that by allocating GB[pound] 0.01, or GB[pound] 0.02 from income tax directly to the NHS, an additional GB[pound] 4bn annually could be raised. The proposals would be in addition to the GB[pound] 13bn already allocated for health spending under the Government's new three-year spending review. If politically acceptable, the move could lead to a rise in income tax.
