UK: LIMITED PAYMENTS FOR DEPARTING DIRECTORS
Article Abstract:
A range of proposals have been announced by the government committee reviewing company law, including limited payments for company directors who resign or are fired. The full report from the committee is due to be completed in 2001, but in the meantime, the committee has proposed new legislation to limit the payments, as well as the creation of a new commission for constant review of company law, and a requirement for companies to issue audited operating and financial reviews to inform stakeholders about their decisions. The changes reflect the wider responsibilities of companies.

UK: DNA SCREENING OF CHILDREN SHOULD BE BANNED
Article Abstract:
Government advisors would like ministers to ban DNA screening of children for incurable diseases until they can understand the consequences. Their report expresses concern at the psychological damage that could be done to young people who find out that they have life-changing conditions, such as Huntingdon's chorea. DNA testing is widely available but paediatricians should not give into parental pressure to test children. The report is based on the responses of 800 paediatricians and geneticists. The findings will help government draw up guidelines.
