UK: REGIONAL AID PLAN REVEALED
Article Abstract:
The UK government has officially announced a GB[pound] 1.2bn regeneration grant for the poorest areas of the country, as part of the Chancellor's recent spending review. Under the plan, revealed by minister for Local Government and the Regions Hilary Armstrong, almost 200 towns will benefit from the cash grants, to be administered by regional development agencies. The money will mainly be directed at those areas in the North affected by the decline in manufacturing and traditional heavy engineering. The former South Yorkshire coalfields area, such as Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, will receive the largest grant of GB[pound] 80mn. Coastal areas will also revive a total of GB[pound] 172mn for improvements.

UK: R&D SPENDING UP BY 10%
Article Abstract:
Official figures released recently reveal that research and development (R&D) spending in the UK rose by 10% to GB[pound] 11.3bn in 1999, the biggest rise in 13 years. The increase was due to higher private sector spending, with Government R&D expenditure remaining relatively static at GB[pound] 1.2bn. Pharmaceuticals and aerospace companies spent the most money, accounting for 22% and 11% of total expenditure respectively, with GB[pound] 1.7bn being spent on defence-related R&D. Other significant investors were the automotive industry, communications equipment, chemicals and computer industries.

UK: URBAN REGENERATION SCHEMES UNDER THREAT
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has raised concerns that interference from the European Commission (EC) could undermine the UK's urban regeneration programme. The EC says that grants provided by the DETR to help start regeneration schemes constitutes state aid and should therefore be vetoed. It is thought that a veto of the subsidies could threaten thousands of jobs related to regeneration programmes.
