UK: MORE MONEY TO FIGHT PROSTATE CANCER
Article Abstract:
8,500 men a year die from prostate cancer, that is 4% of all male deaths, with current average waiting times for treatment being between seven weeks and three months. The government is pledging that this time period will be cut to two weeks and it will also raise considerably the annual GB[pound] 1.2mn research programme into the cancer. A decision on whether to launch a national screening programme is likely in around two months time if it decides to extend a current trial screening programme. However, at present screening cannot distinguish between life threatening prostate cancer which requires radiotherapy or the less serious version which does not need surgery.
