US: OXYGEN BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM
Article Abstract:
Scientists from the University of California, US have conducted research involving some 500 surgical patients to show that oxygen can strengthen the body's resistance to infection. The research has shown that when patients are given 80% oxygen to breath after surgery, compared to the normal 30% oxygen, their rate of infection of halved. The oxygen is said to boost immune cells called neutrophils that kill bacteria in the body, thus enabling cells to fight infection and promote a faster recovery. The research is good news for the newly fashionable oxygen bars where customers can order a cylinder of oxygen with their drink. The marketing manager of the Oxygen bar in London, UK, John Yantin, says that the canisters of oxygen, that it sells for between GB[pound] 8 and GB[pound] 12, give the body a buzz. Yantin is to promote oxygen as the 'mixer for the millennium'.

US: STUDY OF CONTRACEPTIVE PILL FOR MEN
Article Abstract:
US researchers have discovered that infertility among males can be caused without damaging side-effects, bringing the creation of a contraceptive pill for men a step closer. A new approach in which sperm production is manipulated has been discovered during tests on mice by scientists headed by Salk Institute's Professor Tony Hunter. A specific gene mutation called Kit/SCR-F appeared to impact sperm formation without physically feminising the mice or changing their mating patterns, noted Prof Hunter. The fact that no side-effects occurred is regarded as the most crucial aspect of the research, bearing in mind the concern over loss of sex drive resulting from man taking a contraceptive.

UK: WORK-RELATED STRESS CAUSES SELFISHNESS
Article Abstract:
A study in the journal Group Dynamics: Theory, Research and Practice reveals that employees under stress are less willing to work together, and focus more on their own personal goals. It was found that stress led to a severe breakdown of team performance, with failures in co-ordination and communication. The solution to maintaining effectiveness is seen to lie in delegation. The UK has seen a steep increase in stress-related work absences since 1997. The Institute of Management estimates that over 50% of the country's employees suffer from stress, while the Health and Safety Executive judges that stress-related absences cost the British economy GB[pound] 6.4bn per year.
