UK: BANKS TO CEASE ISSUING EUROCHEQUES

Lloyds TSB, National Westminster, HSBC and Barclays are contacting their customers to inform them that they will stop issuing Eurocheque guarantee cards. No further Eurocheques are to be issued, following the Eurocheque organisation's decision to close. International use of credit cards and cash dispenses has largely made the Eurocheque system redundant.

The Sudanese government is developing a programme of banking sector reform. This programme is intended to encourage mergers between large and small banks, thus scaling down the number of institutions, and also to expand the capital base of the banking system.
