UK: PENALTIES FOR TOBACCO SMUGGLERS
Article Abstract:
The government's Paymaster General, Dawn Primarolo, has outlined a new initiative targeting those smuggling cigarettes from abroad. All 20mn UK motorists are to be informed that smuggling offences may result in driving disqualification, or up to seven years' imprisonment for the most serious offences. Off licence traders dealing in contraband goods risk losing their licences and their right to national lottery machines. The Treasury is concerned at the number of individuals bringing in large quantities of tobacco from trips to the continent, in addition to organised crime gangs who see tobacco as a safer alternative to drug smuggling. The cost to the UK government of such activity was GB[pound] 2.5bn in 1999.

UK: CONCERN AT FORMULA ONE'S TOBACCO DEAL
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, could shelve controversial moves allowing Formula One motor racing to be excluded from the tobacco sponsorship ban. Health organisations and senior Labour Party MPs are putting pressure on Mr Blair to deal with claims that Formula One leader, Bernie Ecclestone, made a GB[pound] 1mn donation to the party. A Bill banning tobacco company sponsorship and advertising in the UK planned for inclusion in the Queen's Speech scheduled for November 2000 could also contain plans to abolish the three-year exclusion given to Formula One.

Smuggled tobacco to cost GB 2bn in lost tax
Article Abstract:
The increase in smuggling cigarettes could cost the Government GB 2bn in lost tax. The Tobacco Manufacturers' Association says there has been a sharp rise in illegal imports and hand-rolled tobacco. In July 1998, the Government estimated that the government lost GB 690mn of tax to smuggling in 1997. The TMA believes the real loss is closer to GB 2bn. The TMA is lobbying the government to bring UK duty in-line with European levels.
