Article Abstract:
Pioneer's GB[pound] 1.5bn purchase by Hanson could be referred to UK regulators by the European Commission (EC), it emerged on 7 March 2000. The Department of Industry is keen for the building materials deal to be examined in relation to competition regulations in the UK. The indications are that Hanson may be asked o undertake up to two minor disposals in markets where there is duplication with Pioneer, possibly involving the South Wales and SouthEast ready-mix concrete operations. The UK's plea is expected to be agreed to by the EC, with the Office of Fair Trading to subsequently take a closer look at the agreement.
