UK: NS HEAD CALLS FOR BETTER PAY STATISTICS
Article Abstract:
Len Cook, the head of National Statistics (NS), the government body responsible for most of the UK's economic and social statistics, has revealed plans to introduce a more accurate measure of labour costs. Mr Cook said that although the widely criticised official average earnings figure, the current measure, was reliable, it was also irrelevant as the world moved to globalised economic activity. The average earnings measure was suspended earlier in the year after being revised several times. Mr Cook said changes in the structure of the job market, which included the development of part-time working and contracting out, meant that the measure of dividing the total wage bill by headcount was becoming less useful. The NS has also announced plans to introduce a full Internet-based service for accessing statistics within a year, designed to give the Chancellor "a full picture of the British economy".
