UK: REPORT REVEALS SIZE OF BRAIN DRAIN
Article Abstract:
The number of Royal Society fellows living outside the UK in 1999 totalled a record 307, equal to 26% of the overall number and up on the 18.4% reported 20 years previously, indicating the size of the so-called brain drain. The fellows are regarded as the top scientists in the UK, Ireland and the Commonwealth and the findings contained in a Committee of Vice-Chancellors & Principals report is of concern to scientists and leading academics who claim that UK higher education standards are in decline. In the US, professors have to cope with less red tape, obtain better research funding and earn more than in the UK and the over-riding feeling is that UK scientists are held in low esteem.

UK: CALLS FOR DEGREE STANDARDS INQUIRY
Article Abstract:
Chris Woodhead, the chief inspector of schools, would like universities to launch an inquiry into degree standards. As head of Ofsted, the schools standards watchdog, he said all degree courses should be judged on whether they led to a job. He is also worried about grade inflation in universities with each successive year achieving better degrees. He also criticised the academic identity of some vocational degrees. He wants the university watchdog, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) to carry out the inquiry.
