UK: RETAILERS FAIL TO CAPITALISE IN DIY MARKET
Article Abstract:
British home furnishing retailers have not exploited the popularity of DIY as a leisure activity. Home improvement TV programmes have boosted spending on DIY and homewares but added little to furniture and floor coverings. The retailers have exhibited little brand value in the mass market. The sector has failed to respond to the popularity of DIY. Retail sector analysts Verdict felt excessive focus on price promotions, insufficiently attractive ranges and poor retail environments meant they missed out on demand. The only success story was Ikea who specialised in self-assembly furniture in modern styles. Ikea doubled market share to 4.2% between 1995-1999 while MFI share went down from 11.6% to 7.5%. GUS dropped from 2.5% to 1.9%.

UK: M&S CONSIDERING INNOVATIVE CAMPAIGN
Article Abstract:
Marks & Spencer (M&S) is in talks with the managers of a troupe of male strippers as part of an innovative attempt to revive lacklustre sales at the troubled UK-based retail group. Under the possible link-up, The Dreamboys dancers would appear on stake in M&S clothes as part of a 30-date stripping tour across the UK. The campaign would coincide with the 23 October 2000 launch of Men's Autograph, a new men's fashion range.
