UK: CONFLICT AMONG POST OFFICE STAFF
Article Abstract:
The Post Office's 160,000-strong workforce is split over management plans to boost productivity, with certain activists indulging in an aggressive and intimidating campaign against fellow employees. Plans which entail fundamental changes to established working methods provoked one member to send a letter to a local branch in the UK which contained a knife blade. The Post Office's future is believed to lie in striking deals with private sector firms but senior managers are having to deal with archaic employment practices and severe industrial relations difficulties.

UK: POST OFFICE TO SCRAP MAIL TRAINS
Article Abstract:
It has been revealed that the Post Office could be forced to scrap its mail trains. At present 25% of the 77mn letter the Post Office handles each day are transported via 32 mail trains. However a confrontation between rail and postal regulators is expected to result in around 20mn more letters per year being delivered by road. This is expected to result in a huge environmental backlash, as it is contrary to the Government's objective of getting freight off the roads and onto rail.

UK: ROYAL MAIL AND LEISUREPLANET END ONLINE VENTURES
Article Abstract:
The Royal Mail and Leisureplanet.com, an Internet-based travel company, have both ended their respective online ventures after failing to develop commercially-viable operations. Several high-profile dot.com companies have failed recently due to reluctance by investors to provide more finance. The Royal Mail venture with Microsoft, called RelayOne, allowed emails to be sent by post, with the Royal Mail printing out the emails at its main sorting office in London and then delivering them by standard mail. However, the high charge, at GB[pound] 1.50 per sheet, or GB[pound] 10 for a 50-page document, proved to be unattractive to computer users accustomed to sending large documents at no cost by email. RelayOne handled only 400 emails per month, compared to the 200,000 needed to break even. Meanwhile, Leisureplant.com, which is owned by South African investors, suffered from a lack of new finance and has decided to reduce its operations to focus on businesses rather than consumers. The UK offices will be put into administration.
