UK: STATE OF HEALTHCARE FOR CHILDREN APPALLING
Article Abstract:
The state of the healthcare system for children is said to be in dire need of assistance. Neglect of children in the UK is leading to an increasing amount of problems in adulthood and needs to be addressed. Experts on child healthcare, nurses, paediatricians and public health specialists, have outlined the fact that child health is not represented at government level - no one is fighting for improvements in the system. Adolescents are neglected more in England than they are in Scotland or Wales - where a minister for children has been appointed. Only one in ten health authorities has a policy on adolescent physical health. Death and disability rates after severe injuries are higher in the UK than they are in the US because there is no national strategy with regards to the caring of the severely injured and there is reported to be only one physician specialising in adolescence in the whole of the UK.

UK: GOVERNMENT TO REVEAL IFV PLAN
Article Abstract:
The UK government will reveal moves on 16 August 2000 that would enable scientists to carry out tests on spare embryos not required by infertile couples. Consent forms will be given to women having in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) in a move, which has been criticised by pro-life groups, and which would present a problem to IVF couples on moral grounds. Department of Health sources stress that patients will be given objective advice and would not be pressurised into signing the document. The government is keen to encompass stem cell research in laws governing the use of human embryos. Stem cells are able to treat a number of diseases, such as Parkinson's.

UK: RECORD NUMBER OF NHS COMPLAINTS
Article Abstract:
A record number of complaints concerning the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK are currently being received annually and the Health Service Ombudsman, Michael Buckley, foresees the figure rising over the coming two years to over 3,300 per year. The poor quality and delays with regard to family doctor cover at night and during weekends represented a large number of the 2,887 complaints, revealed Mr Buckley's annual report on 14 June 2000. The deputising service, Healthcall, was heavily criticised, including insufficient training for workers talking to patients on the phone.
