UK: RISE IN NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES
Article Abstract:
Research revealed on 19 September 2000 shows that 33% of the UK population suffers from an allergy, compared with 15%-20% 30 years ago. The study by St Helier Hospital consultant immunologist and allergist, Dr Amolak Bansal, noted that people with hay fever have a greater chance than ever before of becoming allergic to fruit. One in seven children are now estimated to have an allergy, due mainly to pollution, over-crowding, increasingly sterile conditions and smoking. Allergens are also finding it easier to penetrate owing to the viruses and chemicals in the atmosphere that are harming lung and nose linings.

US: CELARA LIMITS ACCESS TO GENOME DATABASE
Article Abstract:
Celera Genomics will limit access to its database featuring the human DNA sequence and in particular will not disclose information to GenBank, the publicly funded body that allows completely free access. The US-based firm's move has upset certain scientists by stating that only those promising not to employ the DNA sequence for commercial ends will be allowed access. GenBank has been used previously by companies that had sequenced parts of the human genome but Celera is keen to obtain protection from commercial rivals.
