UK: STRESS HITS MANUFACTURING AND OFFICE STAFF MOST
Article Abstract:
Although nurses and teachers have traditionally been classified as having the most stressful jobs in the UK, a new international survey of 90,000 workers reveals that manufacturing and industry workers actually top this list. Lack of human contact at work, unclear expectations set by bosses and the impression that any contribution at work has no effect can all contribute to stress, according to one of the authors of the survey, Vivian Collins from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in the US. The long working hours and high workload typical of UK companies has far less impact. Council office workers are the next category most affected by stress, followed by managers, supervisors and administrators.

Randomly testing time
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for employers in the UK to randomly test their employees for the use of illegal drugs. However, lawyers warn that employers have no right to test their employees unless there is express provision for this in the contract of employment. Taking a sample from an employee without permission constitutes civil assault and a criminal offence. Some observers have raised doubts about the effectiveness of random tests, especially as several prescription drugs can test positive for an illegal substance.

UK: STRESS SURVEY ON MANAGERS
Article Abstract:
A survey conducted by Bupa has revealed that managers in the UK suffer the most stress, are more likely to suffer work related illness and have the least job satisfaction compared to their counterparts around the globe. The Bupa poll covered 24 countries and found the UK to have the lowest physical health rating and second lowest with respect to mental health. The UK also came last in the job satisfaction ratings. The findings were attributed to long working hours, which have knock on effects poor diet and a lack of exercise.
