UK: WARNING OVER PHONE NUMBER CHANGE
Article Abstract:
A high number of misdialled calls continues to be made following the phone number change in London and five other cities in the UK in April 2000, putting pressure on the messaging system that informs callers of a wrong number. Some 10-15% of calls are made using the old number, which could be due to computers, fax machines and other equipment being set to dial numbers automatically. Unless these are reprogrammed, they could contribute to a crash in the telephone system, according to the Big Number organisation, which was set up to manage the change.
