UK: WORKING WOMEN MISSING OUT?
Article Abstract:
Working women in the UK are losing out regarding degree of assistance offered in comparison with counterparts in the rest of Europe, the UK government acknowledged on 9 May 2000. The government indicated that it might be willing to finance an increase in maternity benefits, as Trade and Industry Secretary, Stephen Byers, revealed that the UK had a much higher number of women who did not work owing to family responsibilities. Mr Byers, who also initiate a study of parental leave and maternity pay, noted that on average the maternity leave entitlement in the UK is 8.6 weeks on full-pay, less than the European average. He said that the obstacles deterring women from going back to work after having children could be eradicated as a result of the review.

League tables could be our saving grace
Article Abstract:
Policyholders who save with personal pension schemes can suffer losses if charges are high and lapse rates are also high. The United Kingdom chancellor has announced that performance tables are to be published so that consumers can compare the performance of providers. Changes in employment patterns mean that many people will have to cease paying premiums. High charges mean that some companies will not easily be able to offer as good returns as companies with low charges, even if high chargers offer a strong investment performance.
