UN dances to Washington's tune
Article Abstract:
Opinion on US foreign policy is currently divided between multilateralists who see the US as a world leader, working with allies, and unilateralists who want the US to focus on its own interests and act alone. For the latter group, the United Nations is a large barrier. There has been considerable political pressure to reduce US involvement in the UN, and Congress is now considering a National Security Revitalisation Bill, which seeks to reclaim US expenses for UN peace-keeping operations.

US troops help stem Somalia'a hunger
Article Abstract:
The US Red Cross provided suitable food for the starving people in Baidoa, Somalia. Survivors say war came to their area in Nov 1990 when the United Somali Congress (USC) attempted to overthrow Mr Barre, who fled to Baidoa. Troops took possession of livestock and grain and forced farmers to dig up their seeds. Starving people need about three months to regain their strength, but the next harvest will not be ready until Jan 1994 when the Americans may no longer be there.
