US: FIBRE OPTIC FIRMS LINK UP

Another deal has further consolidated the ultra-high-speed communications industry, with the news that fibre optic cable manufacturer Corning is acquiring Oak Industries, a manufacturer of fibre-optic equipment. The US$ 1.8bn deal will permit Corning to provide both the cables and the equipment linking them to computers. There is strong demand for glass fibre optic cables for high speed Internet communications.

Article Abstract:
Fixed-line telecoms assets including Infostrada in Italy and Arcor in Germany may be sold by Vodafone AirTouch of the UK. The assets were acquired by Vodafone along with Mannesmann, and it is thought that their sale may raise between US$ 15bn and US$ 22bn.
