US planes blaze path for Alliance to take city

US air strikes have formed the basis for a sustained attack by the opposition Northern Alliance on the strategic city of Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. Some observers believe that the Allies are willing to allow the Northern Alliance to take control of the city in return for making its military airport available if required.
