US prepares sweeping air strikes on military targets
Article Abstract:
The US has warned Iraq that it must comply immediately with United Nations demands for unrestricted inspections of weapons sites. If Iraq fails to do so, then the US and the UK will undertake an air attack on Iraq over three or four days in Feb 1998. The main problem with an air attack is lack of certainty about what it would be expected to achieve apart from highlighting the military strength of the US and the UK and punishing Saddam Hussein. An air attack would not really change the balance of power between Iraq and the rest of the world.

Portrait of Saddam: the man setting the world agenda
Article Abstract:
President Saddam Hussein of Iraq has become a key figure in international politics, even though Iraq's population is only 20 million. He has become a leader whose every action is scrutinized very carefully. This has been mainly achieved through war, beginning with Iraq's attack on Iran in 1980. He has shown great skill in manipulating his complex tribal and clan connections, and his opponents have only once succeeded in turning tribal leaders against him.
