Under the hammer or back on the rails?
Article Abstract:
London Underground is now widely acknowledged to be in a very poor state. This is the result of having been the responsibility of many different public bodies since it was nationalised in 1948. The government believes that this situation will be improved through privatising London Underground. However, this is a misguided approach, even though it may well appeal to the private sector. It may be better to recreate London Transport as a public corporation, with a board of directors agreeing financial and performance targets with London authorities.

It goes far beyond Canary Wharf
Article Abstract:
The Jubilee Line extension would create 12,000 jobs in London, England. It would connect Docklands with other parts of London. The design is complete, with 11 new stations of excellent design. The North Greenwich station would provide a park and ride service for motorists from Kent and Sussex. Waterloo and Stratford stations would serve the new international rail terminals. It would be one of few underground lines south of the Thames and the first to run west to east south of the river.

No more transports of delight
Article Abstract:
London's public transport system once set an example to many others across Europe, with its buses, for example, being regarded as the best in the world in terms of industrial design. However, London Transport is now showing what can happen when responsibility for public services is left in the hands of unsympathetic politicians. Buses and tube trains are old, dirty and inefficient, and commuter traffic is often in chaos.
