British firms fail to appreciate the importance of business socialising to the Japanese, although they have satisfied their customers with the quality of components because the need is clear. A Touche Ross report 'A Happy Marriage' surveyed British firms supplying the Japanese. Coopers and Lybrand surveyed management systems in its report 'People's Training and Development - the Vision and the Reality.' Skills in management, understanding information technology and languages are inadequate. Fewer older workers are employed than in Japan.

Limited horizons

Article Abstract:

The UK government has announced that it will introduce legislation as soon as possible to lift the effective bar on limited liability partnerships. However, this does not go far enough for many accountants, who believe that the law on joint and several liability should be reformed. At present, a defendant in a civil case can be held to be fully responsible for a plaintiff's loss, even if there was only a small degree of fault.

Car components manufacturer Unipart has established an in-house university, following a trend which is becoming increasingly common in the US. It sees the new operation as an integral part of the company, and has invested 2.5 million pounds sterling in it. The facility has 14 lecture and other training rooms, and can train 10% of the company's 4,000 employees at any one time.
