How to do a baby a good turn
Article Abstract:
Trained midwife and acupuncturist Sarah Budd practises moxibustion to change the position of breech babies at Freedom Fields Maternity Unit in Plymouth, Devon, England. She is to conduct a scientific trial to establish results. Treatment involves a lighted stick of the herb mugwort heating the acupuncture points on the feet. Acupuncture is used by Plymouth midwives in antenatal and postnatal clinics for many symptoms and it is used for pain relief in the Freedom Fields Maternity Unit. In other areas mothers take private complementary medicine therapists to hospital with them but some hospitals are not keen.

Good or bad, the news comes fast
Article Abstract:
The Whittington Hospital in London, UK, is taking a new approach to detecting cervical cancer. At present, it can take some time for the results of a cervical smear test to be returned from a cytology laboratory, causing anxiety in patients and delays in treatment. With the new Polarprobe method, which uses an electronic probe, there are fewer steps and less potential for error. The pen-like probe is applied to the cervix, and emits both electrical impulses and light waves, sensing the way different types of cells respond.

Broken but unbowed
Article Abstract:
The prospects for people who suffer spinal injuries can be bleak, and they often remain at least partially paralysed. However, Swiss scientists managed in 1994 to find a way to get central nervous system cells to regenerate in the laboratory, a discovery which could have a great effect on the treatment of spinal injuries. The International Spinal Research Trust (ISRT) is now planning a formal research strategy to develop this discovery further.
