Unlock your potential
Article Abstract:
Graduates employed in the UK Prison Service have traditionally had to work for many years before becoming deputy governor of a medium-sized prison. However, this changed with the introduction of an accelerated promotion scheme in 1988. This aims to attract graduates who have the potential to be senior managers, and allows them to skip certain grades, although they must still begin as an ordinary prison officer. They face considerable challenges, especially when they have to manage people older than themselves.

Crossed lines in the single market
Article Abstract:
The UK government hopes to cut down on the amount of unapproved telecommunications equipment being used in the UK by simplifying the standards. The new testing scheme will focus on safety issues, and an approval mark will no longer guarantee that the equipment functions correctly. However, there is a danger that this approach will in fact complicate matters, as BABT will still offer testing to manufacturers, and some retailers and distributors will still only sell products which meet the old requirements.

Pushy parents
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for parents to seek to play an active role in the university life of their child. This is partly because parents now have to make a substantial financial contribution to university education and partly because schools are establishing closer links with parents. University lecturers are finding it very hard to balance parents' genuine concerns against excessive and inappropriate involvement.
