Article Abstract:

Black poet Maya Angelou was commissioned to compose a poem for Presidnt Clinton's inauguration ceremony. This has not been done since John F. Kennedy commissioned New England patriarch Robert Frost in 1961. Poetry is sometimes quoted in political addresses but modern poetry does not use the slick metaphors which speech-writers use. Earlier politicians would have had a classical education and used poetic language naturally.

Article Abstract:

The late film director Michael Powell was one of the most successful British directors before he released 'Peeping Tom' in 1960. This film is now seen as a classic, but at that time was widely criticised and his career never recovered. It is shortly to be released on video, and is likely to attract further debate. Even Leo Marks, who had the original idea for the film, has mixed views about it.

Novelist Paul Auster's early works often had plots which relied heavily on coincidences, and this attracted some criticism. He has now replied to this criticism by publishing a collection of short essays based on events which actually happened to him or to his friends. He has tried to present the real world has he has experienced it, without making any further comment on it.
