Manchester, England won the bidding for the 1996 Olympic Games and beat London in representing Britain in the contest for the 2000 Olympic Games which will be decided in Monte Carlo in Sept 1993. The bid will cost 5 million pounds sterling and the Prime minister sanctioned 55 million pounds sterling to provide facilities. Plans include Britain's first covered velodrome, a new national sports stadium seating 60,000, a training centre and a leisure centre. The velodrome will be built regardless of success in the bid. It will seat 3,500, cost about 9 million pounds and may become the British National Cycling Centre. The support programme is led by the Duke of Westminster, President of Manchester Olympic Bid Committee.

The City of Drama 1994 is Manchester, England, which hopes to become the site fo the Olympics 2000. In 1994 it hosts the 'Global Forum' and the World Chess Championship. The council aims to leave permanent improvements for the city. Chairman of the development committee David Plowright connects it to the Decade of Opportunity. Much of the work involves finding sponsorship and training companies to explore new avenues for funding themselves. The manifesto is concerned with improved access for all primary shcool children and disabled people.

More than a fair Exchange
Article Abstract:
Architectural firm Levitt Bernstein's redesign of the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester, England, following the bomb attack on the city in Jun 1996 has left the unique in-the-round theatre space unchanged. The work has focused on refurbishing the theatre's surroundings and its technical facilities. There will now be a season running until Jan 2000, during which world premieres by Jim Cartwright and Peter Barnes will be performed. The return of the Royal Exchange Theatre Company to the centre of Manchester has great symbolic importance.
