Taliban force aid agencies into front line
Article Abstract:
Foreign aid agencies in Afghanistan have reacted angrily to an order from the Taliban authorities to move staff in Kabul, Afghanistan, to a bombed-out building on the outskirts of the city. The aid agencies believe that they cannot operate from this building, which is in a very poor state of repair and close to the front line in the battle between government troops and opposition forces. They are now threatening to withdraw, a move which would create significant problems for the many people in Kabul who rely on their work.

Rival groups rush to stake claim to Kabul
Article Abstract:
The UN peace plan for Afghanistan is threatened by the rivalry between Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia for power and by civil war. The leaders of rival mujaheddin groups, Ahmed Shah Massoud, leader of the Jamiat-e-Islami, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, leader of the Hizbe Islami, and Abdul Haq, a Pathan, surround Kabul with their forces. They are hoping for support from the Afghan army, which if divided into Pathan and non-Pathan lines, would cause chaos and prevent the UN from sending neutral Afghans to form an interim government.
