Vice-chancellor quits university that taught curry-making and kite-flying
Article Abstract:
The UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education has stated that it no longer has confidence in the ability of Thames Valley University to award degrees. This has prompted the resignation of Mike Fitzgerald, the university's Vice-Chancellor. The Higher Education Funding Council has stated that it will sent an external review team to work with the university on an action programme. Concern about standards at the university, the former Polytechnic of West London, arose in 1997, when an industrial dispute led to students' work being unmarked.

Sex between teachers and pupils can be 'educative' - schools chief
Article Abstract:
UK Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead has attracted considerable controversy after expressing the view that the difficulties resulting from relationships between teachers and sixth-formers can be educative. He does not believe that a teacher should automatically be removed from the profession for having a relationship with a pupil aged 16 or 17. However, he does not oppose planned legislation making it a criminal offence for teachers to have sexual relationships with 16- and 17-year-olds.

Dons' boycott broken by universities
Article Abstract:
Industrial action by British university teachers has not halted the admission of new students. There has been confirmation for almost 222,000 students that they have secured places for the 1999-2000 academic year, compared with 219,465 students in Aug 1998. The number of would-be students awaiting a decision has fallen by 4,000, which may be because there are fewer applicants, or because more applications have had earlier offers confirmed.
