Fighting for the right to build homes
Article Abstract:
Housing association government grants will be reduced from 72% of the cost of new homes to 55% by 1995/96. This will force an increase in rents, which tenants, who are mainly low-paid workers or unemployed, cannot afford. The National Federation of Housing Associations launched a campaign for social housing. An independent economic forecast by UBS Phillips and Drew shows 85% of tenants would become dependent on housing benefit, creating welfare ghettos.

The parents who are fighting for their choice
Article Abstract:
The Sutton Parents against No Choice action group objects to their children not being placed in their first, second or third choice of school. Some pupils are sent to schools miles away when there is a school on their doorstep. The 1988 Education Reform Act gave parents the idea they had absoulute right of choice, but they only have the right to express a preference. A Labour Party survey found that fewer parents achieved their desired school in 1992.
