WORLD: LACK OF FUNDS FOR UN HEALTH PROGRAMMES
Article Abstract:
The United Nations (UN) has reported that it is unable to maintain health programmes around the world due a failure by industrialised countries to meet their aid commitments. According to Nafis Sadik, the retiring head of the UN population fund, this has contributed to an increase in world population growth of 75mn people per year, as family planning facilities are not widely available. Around 80mn pregnancies each year are unwanted, according to a survey of women. The report, The State of the World Population 2000, also says the control of AIDS has been hampered by a shortage of condoms, while women continue to be given less medical care than men. The US, France and Germany are all far from meeting their promised contributions and only US$ 2.1bn of the US$ 5.7bn pledged in 1994 has so far been received, and although the UK's contribution has doubled to GB[pound] 15mn, this is still less than required.

The ECGD offers export credit for businesses based in the UK involved in work overseas but came under fire for supporting Turkey's much debated Ilisu dam project.
