Waiting on the Cafe Rouge revolution
Article Abstract:
The acquisition by Whitbread's of the Pelican Group, with its Cafe Rouge and Dome chains is a reflection of the trend towards eating out at themed restaurants and value for money establishments. A report by the UK Economic and Social Research Council, produced in April 1995 indicates that 94% of those surveyed had eaten in restaurants at least once in the year to that date, and that they did so every three weeks on average. According to one of the authors of the report, however, variety and quality are less important than socialising.
