Wake up Britain: Europe's not the world
Article Abstract:
The UK has over recent decades focused its foreign policy on developments in Europe, and this has prevented it from formulating responses to fundamental international changes. It has as yet hardly started to adjust to the changes brought about by the end of the Cold War, and has not yet focused any attention on the Asia Pacific region, which is rapidly becoming the centre of the world economy. It is now time to realise that the national state and international competition are taking on new meanings.

A bumpy ride looks likely for sterling
Article Abstract:
Sterling could face a period of uncertainty and instability because of the UK government's decision not to participate in European economic and monetary union. The volatility of sterling will become an increasingly serious issue because, as the euro is more widely used for business transactions in the UK, there will be growing exposure to foreign exchange risk. Instability is also being created by continued doubts about whether the UK government intends to join European economic and monetary union.

Europe and the US: the first is growing wider
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the recent decision by the US Congress to lift the Bosnian arms embargo is a symptom of a much deeper gap which is now opening up between Europe and the US. The Atlantic alliance of the US and western Europe appears on the surface to be very strong, but areas of disagreement are starting to emerge. Some observers see this as the result of an institutional deficit, while others attribute it to personalities.
