Last hope on Death Row: call McCloskey
Article Abstract:
Some 10% of US prisoners who plead not guilty at trials are innocent, according to Jim McCloskey, founder and president of Centurion Ministries, a charity which helps people who have been wrongly accused. He left a lucrative career as a management consultant to devote himself to helping these people, and has now been responsible for getting four death-row inmates released. He has to fight particularly hard against growing conservatism in the US.

Here at the last chance saloon
Article Abstract:
There are now more than 15 well-known literary salons in New York. American writers have traditionally shunned the European salon tradition, but a new atmosphere of congeniality seems to have developed in the 1990s.

The last word from the first man of chat
Article Abstract:
Phil Donahue, the inventor of the talk show format, has announced that he is to retire after 29 years. He has faced strong competition from other talk shows over recent years, and has seen audience numbers fall to less than 2 million. However, he is proud of his influence in this field of television broadcasting, and does not criticise rival hosts who focus on trivial issues.
