Strike and protest action in France against the government's plans for welfare reform has taken on a significance far beyond the dispute itself. Some observers now feel that the outcome of this struggle will determine the course of France, and possible even of the whole of Europe, for many years to come. The rate of escalation of the civic protest has taken most people by surprise, but the government remains determined to go ahead with the planned reforms.

Prize battle strips Academy of all honour
Article Abstract:
The decision by the Academie Francaise to award the 1996 best novel prize to Calixthe Beyala, a black woman novelist from French Cameroon, has attracted considerable controversy. This is mainly because she has been accused by a number of different sources of plagiarism. Indeed, she has even been fined by a court for taking passages from a novel by US writer Howard Buten. She claims that she is being victimise because she is black and a woman.

The many economic, social and health problems faced by the around 25,000 Lakota Sioux Indians who live on the Pine Ridge reservation are discussed. There are signs of gradual improvement, with facilities such as a children's clinic having recently been established.
