Welfare system must be as flexible as the workforce
Article Abstract:
The UK government must take into account likely future trends in the structure of the labour market as it considers how to reorganize the welfare state. It is very difficult to anticipate these trends, but there are a number of possible developments. The shift in employment towards women and away from men may tail off, and employment opportunities as a whole may increase. The rise in part-time working may slow down, and there may also be a blurring of the division between temporary and permanent workers.

A hundred years of measured judgements
Article Abstract:
The New York Times has recently published a selection of its books reviews over the past 100 years. These give a very interesting insight into the spirit of the time in which they were written. The review of Hitler's 'Mein Kampf,' for example, rightly places Hitler's rise in its historical context and foreshadows the Holocaust. The review of 'Gone with the Wind' rightly states that it is a remarkable first novel, while the review of 'The Great Gatsby' is also of very high quality.

Markets lack faith in a single currency
Article Abstract:
Political debate about the possibility of relaxing the Maastricht criteria to allow more European Union countries to qualify for membership of the European Monetary Union (EMU) has had an impact on financial markets. If less strict criteria are agreed, then the 'euro' is likely to be weaker. Concern about this possible development has already had a negative impact on the German auction of five-year bonds recently.
