Consumer windfall could yet save the Tories
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the UK's Conservative government is in such disarray that a general elections should be held in the near future. However, prime minister John Major may be better advised to try to remain in power as long as possible, especially as a rise in consumer wealth may benefit the government. Extensive spending on lottery tickets indicates that consumers do have money to spare, despite continued difficulties in the retail sector, and personal income is set to rise by around 1 billion pounds sterling in spring 1996 as households in England and Wales receive a rebate of 54.60 pounds sterling as a result of the flotation of the National Grid.

A mountain of reasons to reduce public debt
Article Abstract:
Public debt has not risen as rapidly in the UK as in other countries over recent decades, but the UK economy has still been badly affected by excess borrowing elsewhere. It is now time for low-debtor nations such as the UK to call on others to take stricter measures to control their debt. There is perhaps even a need for a world fiscal authority with the power to enforce the budget rules set down in the Maastricht Treaty.
