What track is the Labour Party travelling on?
Article Abstract:
The privatisation of Railtrack presents a serious challenge for the Labour party, which is already showing signs of splits on other important issues. The party has emphasised its commitment to a publicly owned railway, but has failed to issue details and to explain how this will be achieved if Railtrack is sold off before the Labour party becomes the party of government. Party leader Tony Blair's statements on this issue will play a significant role in determining the future of the UK's rail network.

Off the beaten track
Article Abstract:
Many British people greatly enjoy travelling by train, and see the country's railway system as symbolising permanence and stability. However, British Rail (BR) has been the subject of extensive criticism. This has not prompted ordinary people to support rail privatisation, as the government had hoped. Passengers fear that privatisation will have a particularly negative impact in rural areas, where services have traditionally been subsidised.
