What will a voucher buy your child?
Article Abstract:
The UK government has denied that it is considering a voucher scheme for children of compulsory school age, but may introduce such as scheme for children aged under five and over 16. A voucher would be exchanged for a nursery, school or college place, and the scheme would unite local authority nurseries, voluntary places in playgroups and places in private schools. The value could be fixed centrally by the government, or it may be determined by local authorities.

Are the national tests failing our children?
Article Abstract:
The UK's national assessment tests for children aged seven, 11 and 14 have been changed a number of times since they were first introduced. This means that they provide very little real information about standards in schools. Some observers feel that it may now be time to return to more traditional ways of measuring educational achievement, such as assessing a child's reading age.

Brains, beaks and tailcoats
Article Abstract:
Eton, the UK's top public school, still has a very upper class image, even though admission is now on the basis of merit rather than family connections. Academic standards are extremely high, and pupils are placed under a great deal of pressure. However, it is still really only the sons of wealthy families who attend the school, as fees are 12,300 pounds sterling a year.
