Should we dictate which books our children read?
Article Abstract:
The UK government has been relatively cautious in its choice of set literary texts to be studied in schools. However, some of the bleaker texts of the 20th century, a time of chaos and guilt, have been included. These include George Orwell's 'Animal Farm,' a very powerful image of the degeneration of revolution into dictatorship. The most interesting choice is Evelyn Waugh, whose work contains elements of satire, religion and pessimism. There will inevitably be some criticism of the selection. Some observers will question where prescribed texts are required at all in a time of cultural pluralism and decanonization.

Is there a critic in the house?
Article Abstract:
At the beginning of the 20th century, leading literary figures were expressing dismay at the lack of a critical attitude among ordinary people. As the century has progressed, criticism has become much more widely practised, and it now seems that it is being taken to extremes. Mass-media technologies are allowing ordinary people to express their views in many different ways, and almost all magazines contain 'cultural' reviews on a wide range of subjects. The critic is no longer a disinterested observer, but has become a style-setter and agenda-maker.

Hello Ian, goodbye Bill
Article Abstract:
Literary magazine 'Granta' has gained a strong reputation for new, original writing. It started from obscure roots in 1979, but has now become one of the leading arbiters of literary developments. Its founder and editor, Bill Buford, gave it a sharp political edge, but it is now being accused by some writers of having become institutional. The task of dealing with the challenges of new literary trends is now being taken on by Ian Jack, the new editor.
