What's IT done wrong? Er, nothing
Article Abstract:
It is very unclear why many investors have dumped considerable quantities of information technology (IT) shares since summer 1998. The main reason seems to be that investors are concerned about the exposure of IT companies to the financial services sector. Many observers believe that investors have overreacted, pointing out that IT companies still have considerable growth potential. Stockbroker Albert E. Sharp believes that IT companies will not necessarily be negatively affected if the UK economy goes into recession. Indeed, some may even thrive.

The information technology revolution in the UK is being driven by developments in Cambridge, England. The high-tech industry in this area has expanded rapidly, with particular growth in telecommunications, network computing, consultancy and biotechnology. The town is the leading centre for biotechnology research in Europe, and has many information technology firms. Some observers link developments in Cambridge with a wider trend towards the emergence of centres of excellence as driving forces behind the information age.
