Global warming will prompt a significant rise in the number of environmental migrants, according to research published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences. In 2000 alone, a further 22 million people became refugees, with governments being unable to control the forces that spark off migration. Environmental migration is mainly arising in sub-Saharan Africa, but is also seen in many other regions.

Around 450 million people in 29 countries are currently suffering serious water shortages, according to the International Water Management Institute. This organization anticipates that by 2025 around 2.7 billion people will live in parts of the world where there will be regular and serious water shortages.
