When politicians seek God's help
Article Abstract:
The Church is almost certainly the only large national structure that is totally independent of the government and ministers have recently started to seek more help from the Church. Since the demise of Margaret Thatcher the Church has taken a much more active part in public life, with initiatives such as calling for a Royal Commission into family life. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York make a considerable number of speeches on various matters of political import but they are seldom criticised by politicians. The government is tending to use religion as another way of getting its policies across.

Silicon souls
Article Abstract:
Engineers from British Telecom involved in artificial life research want to record the electrical impulses which are transmitted along the nervous system onto memory chips, and it has been suggested that by 2026 people might be able to live the life of another person, but this does not take into account that the experience of human beings is not digitisable. When people hear, see or feel, data is processed by the brain, following complicated rules. The BT proposal is based on transferable reality.

To Bosnia's holy ghost town
Article Abstract:
British pilgrims visit the shrine of Medjugorje near Mostar, Bosnia, to be blessed. They believe the Virgin Mary has appeared to six visionaries every evening since 1981. Before the civil war 30,000 to 50,000 pilgrims went, but in 1993 it is a holy ghost town. The Virgin Mary brings messages of wanting prayer, fasting, conversions and peace.
