Three virgins seeking a home to grace
Article Abstract:
Canova's 'The Three Graces,' a marvellous Neo-Classical sculpture, is now to remain in the UK following a lengthy and expensive battle. Attention must now focus on the most appropriate setting for the sculpture, which is currently on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum. At present, it seems agreed that it will remain there for seven years and then be moved to Edinburgh for seven years, before returning to London again. However, it would be much better to house the sculpture permanently in a purpose-made architectural setting.

A friendly giant to help with the shopping
Article Abstract:
Selfridge's department store in London's Oxford Street is not usually considered for its architecture. When it was built early this century it was a great innovation in style and structure. Its steel frame clad in solid stone combined the best of modern and classical design. Selfridge's founder was an American businessman, Gordon Selfridge, who wanted to bring brightly-lit, open-plan shopping to London. He became a high-profile figure of contemporary London society.

Empire buildings
Article Abstract:
The splendid buildings constructed by British engineers in India in the Georgian period are now facing an uncertain future. Many of these buildings are of very high quality, probably because care was taken to work with guilds of Indian craftsmen. The central and state governments in India do not give much attention to preserving British architecture, and it will be necessary to raise funds abroad, mainly in the UK, if these buildings are to be preserved.
