When the losers of America take to the killing floor
Article Abstract:
The reaction among ordinary Americans to the murder of 12 people in Atlanta, GA, by Mark Barton has been very different from the reaction to the murder of students at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO. Ordinary people found it very hard to understand why the Columbine High School tragedy took place in a secure, middle class environment, but seemed more willing to accept that murders should be committed in Atlanta, where the number of murders has been rising. They also accepted the Atlanta murders more willingly because Barton was a risk-taker with a criminal record.

Images of the gulag that today's Russia wants to forget
Article Abstract:
Nikolai Getman is exhibiting paintings of life in Russian arctic camps during Soviet rule. There was interest in Russia's past which evaporated during the 1990s when Russians started to become more concerned with making money, or surviving. Getman has painted 50 pictures of the camps, from memory, and sees this work as a civic duty. Survivors of the camps asked him to exhibit the works, but a permanent exhibition is not easy in Russia where Communists still hold control in some areas.
