How I learned to love the illogical House of Lords
Article Abstract:
The UK House of Lords cannot be justified rationally, but in fact works very effectively. The Labour party decided to abolish the House of Lords in order to introduce a radical element into its very conservative manifesto, but is replacing the House of Lords with something that may not work at all. It is important to remember that the hereditary members of the House of Lords do a great deal of valuable public service almost free of charge. The Life peers are mainly high earners, most of whom are unwilling to spend time waiting for votes when they have important business matters to attend to.

We must be freed from this elective dictatorship
Article Abstract:
The UK government is updating the centralization instigated by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but along corporate lines. Prime Minister Tony Blair seems to regard himself as the country's CEO, with ministers being divisional managers and ordinary people being customers. His personal style and non-ideological charisma are ideally suited to corporate populism. It is possible to argue that corporate populism cannot be sustained, as it relies extremely heavily on the popularity of Blair himself.
